Civil-military duo discusses Rangers operation in Karachi

ISLAMABAD – While reiterating the resolve to safeguard the frontiers of the country the civil and military leadership said on Tuesday that a befitting reply will be given to Indian provocation at Line of Control (LoC), and operation Zarb-e-Azb and Karachi targeted operation will continue till the elimination of last terrorist.

As per media reports, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday. The meeting continued for more than one hour during which the leaders exchanged views on the situation at the eastern and western borders of the country and internal and external security situation. The army chief gave a detailed briefing to PM Nawaz Sharif on operation Zarb-e-Azb and the land offensive in North Waziristan. The process of reconstruction and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was also discussed during the meeting.

General Raheel also briefed the prime minister about his meetings with US National Security Adviser Susan Rice and the German foreign minister. Media reports said the targeted operation in Karachi, law and order situation in Sindh and arrests of key political figures during the recent times came under discussion between the prime minister and army chief during the meeting. Both the leaders reiterated their resolve that operation Zarb-e-Azb will continue till the eradication of terrorism and the ongoing targeted operation against the extortionists, target killers, criminals and those involved in terrorism in Karachi will be taken to its logic end.

PM Nawaz Sharif said National Action Plan (NAP) has brought peace and tranquillity to the country. “Operation Zarb-e-Azb is war of our generations. We have committed to turn the country into cradle of peace. We have to curb the scourge of terrorism and bequeath a peaceful and prosperous Pakistan to coming generation,” the prime minister said while adding that Pak-China Economic Corridor project will prove an important milestone in the journey of the prosperity and fortification of national economy. Not only Pakistan but also all the countries of this region will benefit from this project, he added. “Enemy is indulging in nefarious activities to sabotage this project, he cautioned, adding that these will not succeed. This project will be materialised at every cost, he vowed.

The report said both the leaders also discussed the cancellation of the meeting between national security advisers of Pakistan and India and a meeting between DG Rangers and Indian BSF chief in New Delhi. The matters related to talks between Afghan government and Taliban also came under discussion and both the leaders agreed that Pakistan will continue to play the role of mediator between Afghan government and Taliban.
