Court grants Gilani seven-day protective bail

ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday granted seven-day protective bail to former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in eight cases of graft, including one into alleged corruption and financial misappropriation in the Trade and Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP).

A single bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi granted protective bail to Gilani for seven days in the cases and directed him to furnish surety bonds of Rs100,000 in each case. Earlier, the former prime minister appeared before the court, accompanied by lawyers and supporters to seek pre-arrest bail in the eight cases.

– A new case and charge-sheet –

Gilani’s lawyer Farooq H Naek told reporters outside the court that a new case and charge-sheet have also been filed against his client for which they will have to appeal the court again for bail. Last week, an Anti-Corruption Court issued arrest warrants for Gilani and Amin Faheem – both leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party – for their alleged involvement in the multi-billion-rupee corruption scandal and other graft cases.
