‘LB Polls in Sindh to be held in three phases’

KARACHI – Local bodies polls in Sindh will be held in three phases – encompassing Sukkur and Larkana divisions on October 31 followed by ShaheedBenazirabad, Mirpurkhas and Hyderabad divisions on November 19 and Karachi division on December 3 this year, said Provincial Election Commissioner, TanvirZaki here on Monday.

Briefing a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary, Muhammad SiddiqMemon and attended by all deputy commissioners and senior police department officials, the election commissioner of Sindh said 29 District Returning Officers (DROs), 316 Returning Officers (ROs) 551 Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), 16,601 Presiding Officers (POs), 1,08,216, Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs), 54,108 Polling Officers (POs) will be deputed for the purpose.

These were said to be besides 2,892 messengers to facilitate the staff at the polling stations. Sindh chief secretary on the occasion directed the DCs and DIGs – Police to urgently develop a fool proof security plan, in close coordination with Sindh Rangers, for the exercise. Urging the concerned departments to extend optimum assistance to the provincial election commission during the phased wise LB election, Memon particularly directed the Education department to nominate a Focal Person to liaison with the Election Commission of Sindh on regular basis.

Local government department was asked to establish a control room for constant monitoring of the polls and facilitating needed coordination among election commission, police, rangers as well as other law enforcing agencies. Sindh chief secretary said provincial departments must coordinate with each other to streamline the election process in all 29 districts of the province, including Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and six district municipal corporations, 37 municipal committees,151 town committees, 24 district councils, 1137 unioncouncils and 553 union committees.
