NA calls introduction of agri marketing reforms
HYDERABAD – Members National Assembly Nawab Yousuf Talpur has emphasised the need of introducing agriculture marketing reforms so that farmers could get proper price of their produce and middlemen and processors do not fleece them.
He emphasised this while addressing a gathering of chilli farmers organised by Chillies Value Chain Group at Kunri to distribute first tranche of equipment procured under Sindh Agriculture Growth Project (SAGP) among chilli farmers,said a press release issued here on Monday. He said that SAGP should be expanded to other crops and other areas in the province also.
He informed that a group of like-minded MNAs in the National Assembly was working on agriculture development document, which may be useful in preparation of Sindh Agriculture Growth Strategy. SAGP Project Director Irshad Ahmed Ansari informed the farmers about various features of the project and their benefits for farmers/producers of chillies, onion, dates and rice.
He said under SAGP, 35000 drying mats, 35000, cover sheets, 3500 portable conductivity meters, four mechanical dryers 5ton/day capacity, 1500 moisture testing meters, 100 water storage tanks, two dust cleaners, two color sorter and 100,000 plastic crates will be provided on 70-30 cost sharing basis to chilli growers of Umerkot and Mirpurkas districts.
Focal Group on Chillies Chairman Mian Saleem said the loongi chilli has peculiar characteristics and is in demand all over the world. “As we were not able to meet international standards due to aflatoxin, our chillies were not being exported,” he remarked. He said that farmers in Pakistan should be provided level playing field to compete other countries in international markets.
Now through drying process we will be able market our at better prices both in local and international markets, he pointed out that SAGP is addressing all gaps in chillies crop both in production and post-harvesting operations and farmers/producers are ready to participate in the project activities.
