Second journalist shot dead in Karachi in 24 hours
Gunmen open fire at Aftab Alam outside his home in North Karachi
KARACHI – A journalist, Aftab Alam, was gunned down near his home in North Karachi neighbourhood on Wednesday, officials say.
He is the second journalist to be killed in the city within a span of twenty-four hours. His killing took place within hours after satellite engineer Arshad Ali Jafri, who was associated with a private TV channel, was gunned down in an attack on his channel’s DSNG van in Bahadurabad. The van driver also suffered bullet injuries in the attack. Unidentified assailants fired on Alam near his home in North Karachi’s Sector 11-C. He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The victim’s mother and sister took his body to Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).
He was shot in the head while leaving his residence to pick his children from school. DIG West Feroz Shah said the police recovered three 9mm bullet casings from the site of the shooting, which took place near Sir Syed Market. Alam, 42, had been unemployed for the past year and a half on account of health issues and had previously worked with the same TV channel. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah took notice of the murder and directed the police to submit a report on it. He has ordered immediate arrest of the killers. Sindh Interior Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal has also sought a report on the attack from Sindh IGP.
