Corporate sector to help BISP in eradicating poverty
ISLAMABAD: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) management in a meeting with the representatives of the corporate sector decided to make collective efforts in eradicating poverty.
The mandate of BISP was to manage poverty by providing financial assistance to its beneficiaries. The corporate sector may play its part in poverty alleviation by diverting its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities towards BISP beneficiaries using their database.
During the meeting, BISP Chairman Marvi Memon said that this move would assist the BISP beneficiaries to graduate out of poverty and stand on their own feet.
Serena Hotel Corporate Strategies Head Moinud din, MEP Private Limited CEO Zahir Maqbool, Ittehad Steel Islamabad Director Shaban Khalid and Microsoft Islamabad Country Manager Nadeem Malik were present during the meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to explore the avenues of cooperation between BISP and the corporate sector and to set the collective targets for CSR in the fields of adult literacy, immunisation and employment opportunities, which would bring a real change and benefit the poor beneficiaries.
She said the BISP was the custodian of a 5.2 million beneficiaries and was a National Socio- economic Registry (NSER) of 27 million households. Demographic directory of BISP contains a multidimensional district-wise database of scientifically recognised poor people of the country. She said that BISP may provide the required data to the corporate firms whichever area and projects they select for their CSR activities. The minister said that the cooperation between BISP and the corporate sector would help to target the needy population of the country.
The representatives of the corporate sector appreciated this initiative of BISP and assured their cooperation by utilising the BISP database.
