Blast at Quetta’s civil hospital, atleast 40 killed
QUETTA: The Civil Hospital Quetta was shaked by a bomb blast early on Monday, which took the lives of at least 40 people and injured many more.
Eyewitnesses stated that scores of lawyers were injured due to the blast who were gathered at the hospital following the killing of Balochistan Bar President Bilal Anwar Kasi at the hands of unidentified assailants.
Advocate Kasi was targeted by two unidentified gunmen who opened fire on his car near Quetta’s Mengal Chowk on Mannu Jan road. The president was shifted to Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
A panic ensued after the bomb went off, causing further chaos everywhere. Hospital sources put the number of injured at more than 35. The blast took place at the external gate of the Emergency Department of the hospital. A heavy contingent of police arrived on the scene and sealed the area.
Rescue teams also arrived to assist the injured and shift them to other hospitals for medical treatment. Emergency was imposed across all hospitals in Quetta.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack and the murder of Kasi. He directed the provincial government to arrest the culprits behind the attacks immediately and bring them to book.
He said, “No one will be allowed to disturb the peace of the province.” He added that the people, policy and security forces in Balochistan had sacrificed for the country. He also issued orders for the injured to be provided the best medical treatment.
Former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the bomb blast and expressed his grief at the loss of lives in Quetta.
The Balochistan governor and chief minister have also condemned the incident. CM Sanaullah Zehri also called for providing the injured with best medical facilities.
One cameraman belonging to a private news channel also died in the blast while another cameraman belonging to another private news channel was critically injured.
Sources also quoted a former president of the Supreme Court Bar who said that the former Balochistan bar president Baz Muhammad Kakar had also died in the bomb blast.
