Naqeebullah killing: protesters blockade Super Highway
Karachi (Web Desk): Angry protesters blockade Sohrab Goth Super Highway on Friday over the alleged killing of Naqeeb ullah Mehsud, calling for sacking of SSP Rao Anwar.
Police opened fire to disperse protesters who had gathered again on the route. Earlier, the protesters had opened the thoroughfare for traffic after keeping it blocked for approximately an hour an a half.
According to the details large numbers of police and Rangers personnel reached the scene and fired teargas shells to break up the protest.
Hundreds of protesters gathered at Sohrab Goth after Friday prayers, blocked Super Highway for traffic and chanted slogans against the Sindh police.
Earlier on Friday, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took suo moto notice of the killing of 27-year old Naqeebullah Mehsud in an alleged police encounter in Karachi.
The body of Mehsud was buried in his South Waziristan hometown. The 26-year-old’s body was brought to DI Khan and a large number of youngsters attended his funeral. They voiced criticism against the Sindh police.
One protester was badly injured after a teargas shell hit his head. Meanwhile, thousands of vehicles were stuck on the highway for hours due to the protest. One track of the highway was still suspended due to the clashes between the law enforcement agencies and demonstrators.
The demonstration was also attended by leaders of various political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, Awami National Party and Pak Sarzameen Party.
No government representative had reached the site to hold negotiations with the protesters until this report was filed.
