Shahzeb murder case: Police arrests Shahrukh Jatoi on SC orders

Islamabad (Web Desk): Police on Thursday arrested Shahrukh Jatoi and two others in the Shahzeb Khan murder case after the Supreme Court (SC) ruled its verdict.

According to reports, Police arrested Shahrukh Jatoi and the other two suspects from the courtroom after the verdict had been announced by the bench. The names of the accused have also been placed on the Exit Control List.

The apex court declared two decisions of the Sindh High Court as void. This took place during proceedings of the Shahzeb Khan murder suo moto case.

The three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, announcing the verdict bench ordered the SHC to constitute a bench to hear the appeal on merit and decide it in two months.

Son of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shahzeb Khan, was gunned down on the night of December 24, 2012 in Karachi’s Defence Housing Society. Seven people, including Shahrukh Jatoi, Nawab Siraj Talpur, his brother Sajjad Talpur and their employee Murtaza Lashari were booked in the murder case.

Setting aside death and other sentences awarded to Shahrukh Jatoi and others pertaining to the trial in Shahzeb’s murder, SHC had ordered review of charges and a fresh trial by sessions court in November last year.

Ten civil society members, including Jibran Nasir, Jamshed Raza Mehmood, Afiya Sherbano Zia, Naeem Sadiq and Faheem Zaman Khan, filed an appeal at the SC’s Karachi Registry challenging the decision.

The petitioners said that they have the legal right to appeal and challenge the judgment, arguing that this is an issue of public importance and involves acts of terrorism, especially considering the fact that the state has consented to the judgment and the legal heirs of the deceased person have compromised with the respondents.
