MQM-P will support PTI’s candidate for Senate opposition leader
Karachi (Web Desk): Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) announced on Thursday that it would support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate in the contest for the Senate’s opposition leader.
Addressing the media alongside PTI leaders, Rabita Committee member Faisal Sabzwari said “A delegation of PTI came to us, seeking support for their candidate in the contest for the Senate’s opposition leader. So we have decided to support the PTI’s candidate.”
Imran Ismail said the MQM was requested to support them to stop the PPP from bringing its own candidate. He said the next opposition leader would belong to the PTI, and they were consulting other parties as well, while the candidate would be announced soon.
Sabzwari thanked the PTI delegation for their visit and said his party had supported Sadiq Sanjrani, an independent senator from Balochistan, for the post of Senate chairman but decided not to support PPP’s nominee for the deputy chairman’s office.
Top seats in the Senate have been filled, the race is now for the Leader of the Opposition as both the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seek to gain the position.
PPP have nominated Senator Sherry Rehman, and if elected she will become the first women in the position in the Upper House of parliament. The PTI have yet to nominate a candidate.
