Sherry Rehman elected as senate opposition leader
Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman elected as the first woman leader of the Opposition in the Senate on Thursday.
A notification was issued by the Senate Secretariat in this regard on the directives of the chairman. Sherry was nominated by PPP on March 14.
PPP makes history by nominating the first woman to lead the opposition, says party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had nominated party leader Azam Swati for the position of opposition leader in Senate.
Sherry Rehman is the 12th Opposition leader in the Senate and seventh opposition leader of Pakistan Peoples Party. She enjoyed the support of 34 senators.
Previously, the office of the opposition leader was held by Aitzaz Ahsan whose six-year term in the Senate ended this month.
Sherry Rehman also served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US (2011-13) and was elected to the Senate in 2015.
