CJP Saqib Nisar reassures elections to be held on time
Islamabad (Web Desk) : There is no margin in the Constitution to allow for a delay in the general elections 2018 would be held on time, CJP Mian Saqib Nisar asserted on Thursday.
In his address at an event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association honouring late Asma Jahangir in Islamabad, the Chief Justice said there would be supremacy of democracy and the Constitution in Pakistan.
“Thankfully we have a Constitution that states everything,” he said while addressing an event at the bar association.
However, the chief justice added that parts of the Constitution that he has read so far do not allow elections to be postponed.
Justice Nisar said while talking about elections being conducted on time said, “Apart from the Constitution, there is faith that the public of Pakistan has entrusted upon me, which I will not breach,”
He added referring to traditional martial laws, “If I am unable to resist martial law then I would pack up and go home, but would not endorse it.”
Paying glowing tribute to late lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said vacuum created by Asma Jahangir’s death couldn’t be fulfilled.
The Chief Justice said Asma Jahangir was like his elder sister. He said Asma Jahangir had great leadership qualities and she was a true humanitarian. He said Asma Jahangir always led protests and gatherings held to promote human rights awareness.
