LHC places ban on ‘anti-judiciary speeches’ by Nawaz, Maryam
Lahore (Web Desk) : On Monday, The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered a temporary ban on the airing of contemptuous speeches by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and other party leaders.
The provincial high court ordered the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to decide on the petitions within 15 days. The electronic media regulator was also instructed to remove anti-judiciary content.
The high court also has directed all concerned authorities to ensure no contemptuous speech is broadcast on any TV channel in the next 15 days. The judiciary will also monitor content on TV to ensure no violations occur.
A full bench headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi and comprising Justice Masood Jahangir and Justice Atir Mahmoud resumed hearing of 27 miscellaneous contempt petitions against those accused of making anti-judiciary remarks.
Since the Supreme Court’s verdict in disqualifying Nawaz as the prime minister last year, the PML-N leaders have openly been targeting the judiciary in their speeches.
